We are looking for an intellectually curious, highly organized, and editorially astute Assistant Editor to support the acquisition, development, and publication of outstanding books.

Position Summary

The Assistant Editor supports the editorial team while independently managing selected publishing projects under the guidance of senior editors. The role combines editorial judgment with project coordination and author management.

The Assistant Editor contributes to manuscript evaluation, developmental editing, line editing, author relationships, cover development, editorial copy, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure books are delivered to the highest editorial standards and on schedule. 

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Development and Manuscript Development 

  • Evaluate manuscript submissions and prepare editorial reports, making informed recommendations to support acquisition and publishing decisions.
  • Manage assigned titles through the editorial process, coordinating revisions, editorial schedules and key milestones with authors, freelance editors and internal teams to ensure projects remain on track.
  • Conduct developmental, structural and line editing, providing clear, constructive feedback that strengthens manuscripts while preserving each author’s voice and intent.
  • Review revised manuscripts to ensure they meet TBLNG Press’s editorial standards, publishing objectives and production requirements before progressing to the next stage.
  • Maintain consistency in voice, style, structure and overall editorial quality, ensuring assigned titles are delivered on schedule and to the highest standard.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Editorial Project Manager and colleagues across design, production, marketing, sales, publicity and distribution, as well as freelance editors and proofreaders, to ensure the smooth delivery of publishing projects.
  • Coordinate editorial activities across teams, ensuring information, approvals and editorial deliverables are shared accurately and on schedule to support each stage of the publishing process.
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration across internal and external stakeholders, helping to resolve issues promptly and keep projects moving towards publication.

Research & Market Awareness

  • Monitor publishing, literary and cultural trends to support informed editorial and publishing decisions.
  • Conduct market and competitor research, identifying emerging authors, genres and opportunities that align with TBLNG Press’s publishing vision and commercial objectives.
  • Contribute editorial insights and research to support manuscript acquisitions, commissioning decisions and the continued growth of the Press’s publishing programme.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum Second Class Upper preferred) in: English, Literature, Linguistics, Mass Communication, Journalism, Publishing, Humanities, or a related discipline.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in book publishing or editorial roles.
